Miembro de una comunidad de pastores nómadas que viven en tiendas en el oeste de Irán.

Hablan un dialecto de la lengua luri (vinculada con el persa moderno) y son en su mayoría musulmanes chiitas. Están divididos en dos grupos tribales, los chahar lang y los haft lang; el rango de líder de todos los bakhtyari se alterna cada dos años entre los jefes de los dos grupos tribales. Muchos de sus jefes han sido influyentes en la vida pública nacional y han ocupado diversos cargos. En general, las mujeres de estos pueblos han tenido una mejor educación y gozan de más libertad que otras mujeres musulmanas de Irán.
